MINE!

there used to be a boutqiue in auckland called drop dead gorgeous. it sold floor-skimming stella mccartney floral silk dresses, true religion jeans (when everybody else thought the name conjectured a cult), chloe jigsaw puzzle bags dripping off gold+perspex chains, meli melo metallic leather carry-alls, and had the most fascinating collection of jewels splayed accross a table under which the black-ribboned carry bags were kept.

there were only about seven pieces of jewellery on display, but each one had the most exciting story to tell. a turquoise and citrine hued bracelet overlayed with effoff sized magenta crystals; the same in orange, sky blue and green. after having a play, i decided that it would have been cruel to seperate them -they needed to be worn together. every piece that i tried on gave me tingles, and i kept frowning at my mother because i aleady had a pink vlevet afterball dress on laybuy and my one-day-a-week job wouldn't cover another purchase, especially of this magnitude. by the end of the excursion i was giddy with the thrill of a new discovery, and was utterly in love with a clear crystal princess/deco asymetrical necklace with neon orange beads; and another necklace which comprised a cluster of greens inlaid in gold, with smaller, fine blue and orange crystals up to the clasp.

as a birthday surprise the green necklace was whacked with a hefty laybuy deposit, and a few months later it was mine. every time i wear it people comment, they ask to touch it, they ask where it's from (checkout girls at the supermarket seem to be the most forthcoming), and they nod vacantly when i enthusiastically tell them about this "amaazing" jewellery designer called tom binns. drop dead gorgeous is now closed, and it's such a shame that nobody sells his gems in new zealand. but .. due to the ingenuity of the internet the same neon necklace that made me melt four and a half years ago in orange is on its way to me in yellow. a much more versatile colour choice. looking forward to its arrival so much!~

watch the throne: a week in review

there are so many photos online of the shows last week that it would seem redundant to try and rehash everything post-mayhem. a few pieces really excited me...

1) i LOVED the bags at the helen cherry show. black laptop-sized fur clutches with tassels. also pretty sure i am going to fall for the knitwear, which is always so understated and timeless. "we'll call you when they come in". yay! (can't find a photo anywhere online that does the clutches justice, but they are stunning in the flesh - i'm sure they are a designer that they stock and not helen cherry as i keep thinking i have seen them somewhere before. will post more when i find out)

2) workshop did some wonderful leather cropped pants, complete with non-invasive zips. in the photos i've found online they look a little ill-fitting, but on the runway were amazing. i took my boyfriend to the show and after i had made numerous loud squealing sounds about the fur clutches (mentioned above), he said "yeah but those leather pants before were prettty nice". word up. looking forward to trying them on...

3) speaking of leather pants, COOP seemed to have various quilted leather skirts and skinny leather jeans. the skirts were actually more like belts, worn with thigh high stockings and boots. am hoping/assuming they will be a little longer in production. the pants looked like really great basics, in a semi-matte finish. these pieces (and the ruffley style of many dresses) harked TRELISE, who although is officially distinct from the brand has certainly been an influence. my favourite piece: a grey patterned coat.

4) black silky pants by 'liam', the successor to the previous madame hawke (by ruby). they seemingly fit exactly like the alexander wang glitter jeans, which are quite straight and relaxed. very nice.

5) headpieces at world. the snowqueen does couture.

6) jimy d wicca dress, pictured here worn by lili sumner. the sleeves remind me of inverted tattoos, and i love the strangely alluring fit. i believe the fabulous pointer ring (which kind of looks like a tusk-cigarette) is available at james' boutique, children of vision.

7) 27names fashion week installation at hopkinson-cundy gallery on cross street. located behind k' road, this is probably one of the hippest venues around. shows which take place away from the official FW site are often the coolest, because you don't get as many loiterers around the periphery. would have been a fun event - the photos that i have seen (via katherineisawesome) look like peep-holes into the collection. oh - and i love a good print.

8) PINEAPPLE PANTS, designed by georgia currie, winner of the westpac young designer of the year award. i wasn't at the show, but georgia let me have a play with some key pieces from the collection - a camel coat with fluro orange piping, and THE MOST AMAZING pineapple pants (which she wore as a taster for her up-and-coming range). photos on their way.

my camera has been playing up, so no outfit photos at the moment. VERY SOON.

the shoes are actually mummy's but i really would love a pair myself. new zealand designed, made in france, softest leather, the prettiest duck-egg/off-white. i have never totally joined the beau coops bandwagon before, primarily because i ain't that mad-keen on wedges, but recently they have been designing some aaamaazing shoes. and apparently (these are a little big) they are ultra comfortable. what more could one want.
am actually waiting to officially wear this dress out once my textured cashmere cardigan comes in from karen walker - it looks so SO much better with the proportions and length of the pleats as it's a much more relaxed fit. this photo was mainly a test shot so that i could try and envisage other possibilities for my dress. a little bit like grandma dress-ups, but much better in the flesh.
also - apologies for the bright orange nail polish. it seems to go with absolutely everything. except mustard.

THE SWEATER: kate sylvester. oversized charcol grey with turquoise fluffy bear (complete with crazy swirl-eyes and claws). goes with everything and is super comfortable.
THE BAG: alexander wang. i had it on laybuy for far too long, the lovely staff at workshop are amazing. have always been sceptical about the wang-hype surrounding their bags (have always loved his tshirts), but this is stud-less, and has just the right amount of rose-gold hardware so as to make it totally stunning. lined in some kind of silk, leather labels, has a really simple black canvas protector bag, also with leather label. so exxcited it's finally mine.
THE PANTS: marc cain (sport). one should always invest in a pair of designer track pants. they can be worn with heels, chucks, or ballet flats. purchased to be worn with a silver-woven tshirt and charcol cashmere cardigan.
THE SHOES: isabel marant poppy pumps. i had been dreaming of these shoes forever, and had conceived them in my mind before they were released. perfect heel height. perfectly flat bow. perfect non-vicious point. I LOVE THEM.

the man who takes the photos for this blog (wallace) was lurking in a doorway, and popped out with his camera. creepy behaviour, one may think, but he was impecably dressed and very friendly (professional, conversational vibe); so the whole experience was rather pleasant/ non-awkward. lots of my friends used to work taking streetstyle photos for fashion websites, so i know how hard this is to pull this off. bravo!

i nearly didn't go in to look at the new kw collection last saturday because the prints looked a little bland in the lookbook. boy i was wrong. this floral comes in another colour wave (but the grey suited me so much better),and it's just the most beautiful, flattering fabric. it sort of looks like a linen so has a really laid back feel, and the mesh sleeves make the dress supremely wearable (layering effect without making me resemble 'skater girl'). as said, photos really don't do it justice. if the lookbook couldn't inspire, i'm not going to be any better, but the clothes really are beautiful! happy day.

i love the grainy texture that emits from the antique glass in the mirror, and the fact that i am wearing a really crazy lingere garment as a skirt amidst a bedroom that is being stripped. i would NEVER wear this out, the suspender skirt is just waay too sheer to justify being a skirt-actual (and also has a rouched bum with a little coral pink 'bunny-tail' rosette), but it's the prettiest thing to wear around the house with the heating turned up.

pippilongstockings. we put put our hair into high pigtails, secured them, then slid a piece of wire (about2mmthick; pre-cut to approximate length) through the hairties, resting on the top of the head. we then plaited our hair, using the piece of wire as part of on of the three 'strands'. secure. the wire should end just after the hairtie, so that there is still a little hair to cover up the ends.

i went through a phase a few months ago where i thought it would be a fun idea to have a play in my wadrobe and take photos of successful outfits so that i could remember them later. the intimacy of these pictures conveys my excitement at the thought of an undiscovered combination so much more than anything taken at a later date could possibly do.

the jewelled ruby buttons on this cardigan also stir supreme excitement. i originally set my sights on a green version which reminded me of a christmas tree (the central panel is woven with metallic thread), which sold out within weeks. this purple is much more versatile, and i love love love it. christmastime/anytime fun.

this photo was taken a year and a half ago in wellington, whilst the yayoi kusama exhibition was on. covering the gallery in polkadots was a work in itself - titled "dots for love and peace". fabulous idea, as the bright colour attracted the interest of many who would have never have otherwise set foot inside. there's something i love about the majority of japanese popart, as it comes out of an explosion that is so much more than the reduction of form and colour. post-bomb, the nation modelled itself on american civilisation, displaced because the ideals clashed furiously with the conservative regimes of the ex-emperor. japanese art emerged (as a reintegration and in part a rebellion) of the purely western practices that artists had been taught in their schools - a distinct style which incorporated both the hard lines of early nineteenth century japanese prints and elements of the american 'pop' movement. the disjunctivity of these splashes of colour against landmark art-deco architecture taps into this, with the dots appearing like price stickers serving to commodify and fetishise the building itself.

outfit was a mishmash of trying to shelter one's ears from the vacillating wind; and patches of summer which somehow underlined this. the bag was one of the best buys ever. i got it about two years ago from workshop to use purely as a washable beach carry-all. it has ended up being used almost every day - wonderful for auckland weather when it always might-just-rain; carries all my books to uni; doesn't run the risk of shedding (like hide tends to do); was a good enough price to just use all the time without worrying about it's irreplaceability; still looks like a handbag.

this painting is my absolute favourite treasure. it took me nearly a year to pay off (thanks to the kindness of scott dargaville, remuera gallery), and sits on the wall above my bed. standing at just under 2metres squared, it reminds me of the macabre desolation expressed in federico garcia lorca's 'blood wedding' (one of my most-loved plays due to its sheer evocativeness). the forms are rendered in dye, taking on a ephemeral quality and making the central figure appear like an abandoned ghost or reincarnation who has been forgotten long after the day of the dead.

supre do some of the best tshirts. unlike other less-expensive wares, they seem to last reallllyy well, and the 100% cotton ones are often abandoned by their clientele (who may just prefer tighter varieties with bountiful elastine) - so are often only about $10. you might have to rummage through for about half an hour, but if you strike a jackpot they are a very simple fit, great worn under blazers and sweaters (to minimise drycleaning bills); and the cost/wear ratio will makes you feel a lot less guilty about washing/fading them to oblivion through over-zealous daily usage. note:: this one is actually some sort of poly-blend, but makes up for it by being a really crazy, baggy, almost tent-like fit. it's so light that it can be worn underneath things without looking bulky, and has these sheer stripes which work really well with marginal-sports-bra-age SLASH layered over lonely hearts underwear. word.

judging a book by its cover

a) i have a friend who likes to carry obnoxious russian novels (such as those of dostoevsky) around with her because they emanate some form of wisdom when they fall out of her bag. ALSO she loves reading them.
b) a book is a good size to fit credit cards, keys, lipstick and a pashmina into. also fits in one's hand rather well.
c) i'm not sure if using the titles of real books somehow undermines the validity of carrying such an item around. if the titles were false, witty and ironic they might have some comic factor. it seems sort of a shame to carry around 'catcher in the rye' and not actually be able to read it toute-suite.
d) the circular bags look like a d-i-y tablecloths that you could whip out at spontaneous picnic events.
e) 50/50.

when, instead of my black-watch tartan emsemble, i had to start wearing a plain blue skirt and white stretch-cotton top to school in seventh form as some sort of 'status symbol', i spent the whole of the summer holidays trying to concoct excuses which would allow me to continue wearing mid-length tartan on a daily basis. no such luck existed, but years on i can now wear what i like! this vogue china editorial is particularly inspiring - layers of mismatched checks worn with those chloe docs (before they were tainted by jeffrey campbell lookalikes) in a grey derelict setting. full editorial here.

navy will always be problematic. the deepest hues purport to be black, and it is only upon their inception into one’s wardrobe that their lie is discovered. these pieces clash so subtly with their intended partners that they can only look like mistakes. they are too dark to be blue, and not slick enough to be black. learning from a string of blunders, i vowed never to touch navy again. the colour may bring promise, but it would deliver nothing.

then the repetto michael loafer (available at jaimie boutique) came along... these were a rich blue with the subtelest tinge of indigo. these would make denim look less dull, and allow me to wear all-black - despite the palour of my complexion -, as they would bring out the glimmer in my eyes. they would lift the bluey tones in grey, and give gold a sense of order and freedom. it was then that i realised. NAVY IS NOT THE NEW BLACK. a long overdue discovery, yes. but one which has allowed me to embrace the colour without fearing the dread of my previously ill-forgotten purchases. as long as they are blue enough to agree with me.

prada 'eco stole' perfection for rainy days and summer flings. i have been thinking about getting a fur scarf for quite some time now, as they emulate the feeling of being embedded in blankets; but the thought of a real animal somehow seems more macarbre whence wrapped around one's neck. faux-fur often resembles a synthetically spun halloween costume, but these manage to BANISH THE WINTER BLUES and tick all the boxes. currently available on ebay here.

note: kate sylvester slips are the best wadrobe investment pieces you could ever hope for. the times when i most need a slip are often the times when my dress is too sheer, or too short, to go without; and thus scalloped edges and lavender-mauve-silk chiffon straps can make all the difference. a quality slip can be layered and worn as a dress, or act as an undergarment - holding the integrity of that which it serves to enhance.

fashion has become so 'cool' these days, sometimes some low-key luxury is just what we need. doing away with frills in favour of patternless, simple cuts that flatter, juan carlos obando's resort 2012 collection gains its appeal in being able to meet the demands of the girl who loves to dance, and knows the billowing effect that a well-constructed silk garment can bring.

the nude pumps are a wadrobe staple, and their pointed, platformless aeshetic somehow states "fierce" without all the that potential tackiness a stacked front can bring - setting off the thigh-high splits and plunging necklines perfectly.

have always adored obando's sense of colour and superb quality. one of my best friends has a version of the dress on the right. she is a fearless spirit who travels to uninhabited islands by herself, is highly selective of the company she keeps, and dines alone (dressed to the nines) in restaurants all over the world. these clothes allow her to be taken seriously, as they don't weigh her down with psychadelic patterns, and make her stand out from the crowd.

“dressing-gown-coat in the perfect duck egg blue linen”: check.
“cream fur pyramid pouch bag with leather straps and a chunky tail": check.
"black and navy cardigan with white stripes”: check.

picture 1 is utterly sublime. said coat is AMAAYZAANNG (kind of makes me go crazy with excitement). am imagining over oyster linen pants with an off-white tshirt when summer finally does roll around. wow.

the style.com review sums it up perfectly - the row's resort 2012 collection has given breton the revival it needed to seem fresh and elegant, after having obliterated the catwalks for so long (and bombarding the bargain bins of chain-stores in sheer volume). however, stripes will always look great in photos, and are undeniably easy to layer or break up an outfit ... if done as well as this, then i say LONG MAY THEY LIVE!

since seeing carrie gallantly race through the night to eat chicken noodle soup with miranda on new year’s eve, i have been somewhat obsessed with pyjama-dressing. throwing on an oversized fur over a pair of loose-fit silk pants, teaming them with pumps or loafers makes one appear effortlessly chic - paradoxically playing on the 'dressing down' look. stepping out around 5pm in luxurious fabrics that are questionably for the nocturnal chamber gives one a sense of mystery; and there is also something strangely empowering about knowing that if one did get tired, one could hop into bed almost straight away.

this season, karen walker has done a sterling job of making this all a reality in her 'perfect day' collection. the silk blazer-shirts and lego-coloured patent clutches dress up drawstring pants for evening; whilst oversized t-shirts and long line cashmere cardigans play down the boudoir effect of bird-print boxers for day.

pyjama-dressing makes you look like you don’t care, but yet that you are so impeccable you find it impossible to not look good.
i have been wearing my peg pants almost daily to uni, with big grey v-neck t-shirts, merino knits and mid-top sneakers. inspiration below.
